For an economical set up as this, being an experienced electrician for nearly three decades, this is a good product. I was surprised that it came with a step-drill bit (unibit as we call it in the field). It has the cutters that shear the knockout, like the more expensive "GREEN" product, not to knock any name as that is a really good set (experienced electricians will know what I mean there. At any rate, if you are looking for a good product, this is a good one. Comes with more than one size spacer, which I really like about it as well.
I reviewed just after purchase (at the end) but thought i should update after 18 months: The dies are holding up well for what this set cost I did not expect it to last but it has. I have used it quite a bit and did tune up the 1" and 1.5" punches, As I mentioned I use it with my green dies for the larger sizes i have and the ram will do 3" holes well. I dont to much larger than 3". If only 1 small 1/2 or 3/4" i use a carbide hole saw since i have to drill the pilot anyway but if doing larger and or more holes this baby is really easy to use and quick, I oil the punch with every use and it only takes a few pumps and the hole is done, if i were to purchase again i would get the larger set up to 4" but when I purchased this I was gambling because it was 1/8 the cost of the green one. I have had no problems with the ram or draw bar and i mentioned i did use a dremel to tune up the cutting edge on the 1" & 1.5" but have done the same on my green set when dull (they may have punched more holes but at 1/8 the cost a little tune up is the same as i do with the green ones) the case has held up well. my apprentice bought the same kit and some of the guys in his class gave him a hard time until they heard that my set has lasted, the only thing that could make this set any better for an electrician is a 1-7/32 punch for industrial control panel switches where I may put 30+ holes in 1 panel (that 1 punch cost almost 40$) I five give the set 5 stars for the cost it should get more but thats all they allow, and I did not request a free gift for my review so you know it is honest.original review:for the price this is an awesome knockout set. I have punched a few holes and it worked as well as my green one. the dies from my green one also fit the draw bar at 1/8 the price hope it holds up but for the price I could buy quite a few new sets compared to the green one.
This is my first experience with a hydraulic knockout punch. I didn't realize how serious of a tool this was going to be. Everything about it screams "solid". My only question is how long the pilot-hole drill will hold up. I made 5 holes on my first outing, and everything was great.
I actually would give this unit 4.75 stars, but I didn't want Amazon to show 5 stars, because it's not quite perfect. But with just a little bit more effort by TEMCo, it could be truly excellent. I bought this unit to punch various holes in project boxes for my electronics projects. The boxes are made of about 1mm thick (20 gauge) aluminum. I have not previously used a hydraulic punch, just manual ones, so this review is written from the perspective of somewhat of a beginner. On the positive side, the various pieces are well packaged and seem very sturdy. As others have remarked, this unit is a great bargain for the price. TEMCo has obviously put some care into the presentation. And I like the warranty. I tried out all of the punches and they work beautifully. The four largest punchout die (1" -> 2") thread on to a main stud, which in turn threads into the hydraulic ram. The other two (1/2" and 3/4") punchout die thread on to a smaller adapter stud, which in turn threads into the main stud. Two thick spacers (provided) fit over the main stud and are used to accommodate the thicknesses of the various punchout die. You will need to play with the spacers a bit to maximize the throw of the hydraulic ram to get the best punch, depending on which punch die you use. Here's where a problem appeared. I could ... not... get (frustration!) the right spacer combination for any of the four largest die. The two spacers provided were too thick. I needed something smaller. I suppose that I could have adjusted how deep the main stud threaded into the hydraulic ram to change the throw distance of the punch. But that seems risky since a lot of force is applied to the main stud and I wanted it fully threaded into the ram. So I went to my local hardware store and purchased some hardened washers that were large enough to fit over the main stud. Each washer was about 9/64" thick. I found that three of these washers worked perfectly to give optimum throw for the 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2" die. And I added a fourth washer to optimize the throw for the 1" punch out die. For the small 1/2" and 3/4" die, two of these washers in addition to the thick spacers provided in the kit gave the best throw. I think these should have been provided in the kit, or if they really aren't needed, then a better description of how to use the spacers provided would have been nice.A couple of other useful tips. Put a little oil on the threads of the studs and the punchout die. It makes it easier to assemble and disassemble the die, especially as they tend to jam if the cut is not complete. Also, the pilot hole that you must drill in the panel is very large if you are using any of the larger (1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2") punchout die. I found that the 1/2" punchout die gives a hole exactly the right size for the pilot hole of the larger punchout die. This saves having to muck around with a very large drill bit.So, all in all, a beautiful unit. Just needs a few smaller spacer/washers and a bit better written description to be perfect.
I purchased this product 7+ years ago. Being an electrician I have punched countless hole into panels and boxed including stainless steel. I am surprised how well it has held up. I have no leakage and have only had to replace on die (3/4) because it was getting dull. For the price at the time. I consider it a great purchased and have gotten my money's worth and then some.
I was installing a generator and needed to put 2" knockouts on the transfer switch. This unit worked great. It was a little difficult to figure out which spacers to use, but once I figured out, it made quick, clean cuts with ease. The directions could be better.
This is actually my 3rd tool from TEMCo. I’m consistently impressed how they get this quality at the price point. Works just as well as the Greenlee it’s replacing. It’s smooth, cuts clean, and it’s easy to remove the punched out piece the way it bends it. If you need a punch kit, and this one has the sizes you need, you won’t be disappointed.
I have been very satisfied so far. I purchased for a job that required 24,1-1/2" holes and 6, 2" holes in 1/8" plate. No issues. I have recommended to other techs. Great value.
Good product for the price. I have one minor issue. Issue 1: The product description says it is compatible with GREENLEE and other domestic punches, well yes and no. I suppose it depends on what you consider compatible. The GREENLEE punches will thread onto the adapter draw stud, but the die cup will not fit over the stud. My set came with two draw stud adapters both 0.430 diameter. These work with the 1/2" and 3/4' punches included with the set. The molded case has a place to store each draw stud adapter. One slot fits the adapter perfectly. The other slot is too small, seems like it was designed for a smaller diameter draw stud. This smaller diameter draw stud would seem to be perfect to allow the GREENLEE die cup to work. When contacting the seller I was told that the set comes with two identical draw studs, one is a spare. They advised to force it into the smaller slot but place the knurled knob the other way so it will be easier to pry out. Why I need a spare draw stud and why it wouldn't fit into the case is beyond me. Seems a bit fishy to me, but that's what I was told. Also, the picture shows three different size spacers. My set came with two large and one small spacer. This has not been as issue as I've been able to punch 1/2", 3/4" and 2" holes with these spacers. I don't know if there will be an issue or not with other sizes. Other than my disappointment in not being able to use my existing GREENLEE punches, the TEMCo unit is easy to use, is well packaged and appears to be a quality product. I've punched a few dozen holes in metal enclosures with ease.
The media could not be loaded. UPDATE: We still use this for work and are happy every single time. I just wanted to let you know I used it on a 5gal plastic bucket to make a duck feeder. It worked great with that too :)We bought this not really knowing what it was. We just needed a hole bigger than any bit we had. Buying the large bit would cost twice as much. We set it up, read the instructions (kinda) and BOOM!!! We had our hole and were stoked at how easy it was. It is a for sure thing to get if you need holes in metal. It reminded me of my first cuisinart...you spend the large amount of money and end up using it for a few seconds, but oh the time that spent money saves you. If this is anything like my cuisinart it is money well spent as I've had that since my first marriage 30 years ago and its still being used 30 seconds at a time. I wish my video showed the actual hole that was made. it was perfect, but we were just so damned excited about the ease. Get one if you need holes :)
