I ordered this fan for both personal and business use. I've had commercial-duty carpet drying fans in the past, but I wanted to see if I could find a fan that could come close to the performance without coming close to the price. This little fan has proven to be excellent! Though medium-to-small sized, this fan pushes a remarkable amount of air. Below are salient points discovered through use...* Power - This fan moves a decent amount of air. It will very adequately ventilate a room 25' X 30', or larger spaces when placed on the high setting. I have found it ideal for ventilation when painting, and it has enough oomph for large spaces, so I don't have to keep moving it around. It also has worked very well for drying areas with wet paint, or drying CVT floor mastic, or for general house ventilation on hot days.* Adjustability - The fan itself is a squirrel cage design, but it is not fixed in its frame. The main body rotates in the frame so the vent may be pointed up or down, depending on need. Though the same could be accomplished with a fixed frame and a couple of books or blocks of wood, I have found this feature to be very handy with regular use. The fan motor switch also has three settings, low, medium, and high.* Noise - There really isn't very much of this at all- the fan is surprisingly quiet, even on high. It is quiet enough, in fact, to use inside at night in a hot house; it is not noisy enough to distract from quiet conversation or from music while I'm on a job site or working in my shop.* Value - This is where the fan really shines. It's a great fan as it is, but it's simply awesome when considering the price. For the price of a commercial carpet drying fan, you could actually get more than a few of these.* Quality - While I like the directional adjustment of the fan housing, it does add flex to the frame. It seems sturdy enough for what it is, but it remains to be seen how this will hold up over time. I could also see the frame not wanting to take a whole lot of abuse, like being dropped from time to time. Extra care should be used, therefore, if this will be used on a job site or commercial setting. The cord that comes with the unit is really heavy and quite long, which is nice. In fact, the cord really seems outsized for a fan this size, but that's fine by me as it will stand up to years of use and being stepped on now and then. While there is no dedicated cord-wrap on the unit, the cord does wind nicely around the unit, under the handle and just below the vent. My only nitpick here is that the cord end does not have a cord-capture notch, as many household vacuum cleaners do. No biggie though.* Size - As mentioned, this is a small-to-medium sized fan but it moves air comparable to fans much larger. Its profile is much smaller than that of a box fan, while being much more efficient in the amount of air moved. It is also smaller than most commercial carpet dryers; while not as powerful as these, I find its size and weight makes it more useful for many applications. In fact, you could get two of these to place them at different points in a home, shop, or work site, and still be out only around a hundred bucks.Other thoughts:The fan has a duplex electrical outlet on the body below the speed switch to allow for other power accessories to be plugged in. Personally, I wouldn't use this for any but the lightest of electrical equipment not knowing how robust the internal wiring is. Nice idea in theory, but not useful for this user in practice. The frame comes with rubber feet at four corners, which add to stability. However, these only raise the frame about 1/16" from the ground. My preference would be more robust rubber feet, but this doesn't detract from my opinion of the fan. Fortunately, the feet are held on by screws, which can therefore be removed to make way for improved feet if you, like me, are so inclined. All in all this is a great fan at a super value and it has earned a place in my home and workshop. I have been very happy with it and can give it a high recommendation!
My house has an addition on it that never seems to get cool enough in the summer or warm enough in the winter. It's as if our central heating/air unit just doesn't have the oomph to push the distance. The problem isn't pronounced enough to warrant purchase of a new system or any other costly solution, so we usually just keep a standard fan in there during the summer months. Unfortunately, most fans are loud, don't push much air, and are a great way for my small children to injure a finger.A few weeks ago we visited a few local retail stores for fans and we came across a Lasko unit a little different/smaller than this 4900 model. We could tell right away in the store that it was an excellent product. Sturdy, quiet, and just an unbelievable amount of air being cycled. In fact, we turned the thing up to level 3 and it blew a bunch of air filters off the shelf on the other side of the aisle. Alas, they were out of stock on this item and we couldn't find it anywhere else.Enter Amazon. We ordered this Lasko 4900 and received it quickly, well-packed, and everything else you expect from Amazon. We were just wowed at how easily it set up. Just plug it in and pick a speed. It is incredibly quiet, though I won't say it is "whisper" quiet. You can definitely hear it. But it is quieter than a box fan by a country mile and will not interfere with your enjoyment of television, music, video gaming, or whatever you might be doing nearby. And here's the kicker. We never use the fan on any setting but 1! It is just that powerful. On its lowest setting it cools the room down very well. I remember when I was growing up in the 70's where a hot summer day meant all the kids parking in front of a big box fan. Those things pushed a lot of air, but they were noisy and they don't cool a whole room very well. Especially when your brother is sitting right in front of it talking like Darth Vader into it. Well, sadly, being turbine-driven, this Lasko won't alter your voice if you speak into it. But boy does it work well. And no worries about small fingers getting chopped, although they could potentially drop a lego inside. I haven't had to deal with that yet.It has some nice features such as the ability for the entire unit (the yellow part) to rotate so the blower is up high as pictured, or down low so you can get just the angle you need. I am certain this thing would do a great job drying a floor.I've only had this unit a few weeks so I can't speak to its long-term durability other than to say it feels very solid. I really hope it lasts for a long, long time because I can't imagine a better fan than this. The only real downside is that it looks so... industrial. But hey, it's a great conversation piece.
I'm extremely happy with this fan. When we built a house in Michigan, I wanted to save money by installing ceiling fans instead of central air. While I don't regret that decision (especially when the electric bill arrives), there are normally a few days each summer that are too hot to handle. We usually head out to an air-conditioned spot and do just fine, but the summer of 2011 has been a scorcher. When I realized we were due for several weeks of temps hovering around 90, I ordered this top-rated fan. It's been running nearly non-stop for the past few weeks and has been worth every penny. As you can see from the photo, it has a wide nozzle where the air comes out. This kicks out air much more forcefully than typical box fans. The yellow part also can be adjusted to a number of positions, including straight up. I tried it on this setting one time, not realizing how powerful it was until it began turning the blades of our (broken) ceiling fan! I can see where this would be helpful in drying a room that's been painted, drywalled or flooded. It definitely looks like something that belongs in a garage; it's not at all decorative for home use. But frankly, in this heat, that doesn't bother me at all. I've got it on the coffee table on the living room and it's going to stay there until summer's over. I had given up on most room fans because they are such a pain to store and gather dust in the blades that's ridiculously complicated to clean off. I haven't actually had this one shut off long enough to clean it, but it looks like it's a simple matter of unplugging it, then using the vacuum brush attachment on the air intake areas, which are on the sides. It's also small enough to store in a box and stick up in the attic in the fall.Normally I like to wait longer before I review a product, but given that others are probably looking for relief from the heat, coupled with the fact that this has been running non-stop, I am willing to go ahead and throw in my two cents worth. I am very glad I purchased this fan and would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm going to look and see if Lasko has something similar that would look nicer in the house. If not, I'm sure I'll be using this again for many years, especially if it's this hot. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend this fan!2012 update: Obviously it was much needed in the killer temperatures we experienced this summer too. Used it round-the-clock again and it was great. Not the same as having A.C., but I sure wouldn't want to be without it.2013 update: My boyfriend's basement flooded this spring so I loaned it to him to help dry the carpet. While I think he could have used a dehumidifier, this was way more powerful and effective than the box fan he started with. He could run it for several days 'round the clock without a problem. I read someone said to point the nozzle toward an open window to help dry out a flooded basement. Unfortunately because of the rain and cold, he wasn't able to try this, but it might be worth noting if you're in the same boat. Still extremely happy with this fan.2015 update: Still love this fan. Run it non-stop when it's hot. We're a bit spoiled here in Michigan--our temps usually drop in the evening so the house stores cool air to counteract the heat the next day, but we usually have just a few miserable summer days where the nights are sweltering too. This isn't a complete solution, but we've been able to rely on this fan to help get us through! I also took it to my parents this summer for them to use while they were waiting to get new fans. Now I'm thinking of getting another--this style is compact enough I'd be willing to tote it back and forth to robotics meetings at our school site, which doesn't have air conditioning either.
I was nervous about this purchase but desperate for some help. The two Vornados I had set on maximum were a constant reminder of Congress -- moving a lot of hot air but not really helping anything. So, with summer arriving to Los Angeles, I decided to give this a go.Based on the pictures, I wasn't wild about its appearance for an indoor fan -- looked like more of a workshop fan to me -- but, as I said... desperate. Although I have an eclectic décor that includes some industrial touches, I wasn't sure how I was going to incorporate this blower with its look-at-me, black and apparently taxicab yellow finish into my autumnal palette. But it arrived a few hours ago and I eagerly ripped into it, as it was just about Noon and the indoor temp was already cresting 85F.Packaging was a bit on the exuberant side. If nuclear waste were so thoroughly packaged then there would never have been a problem in the world. Nevertheless, it did arrive quickly and safely, as promised.I was pleasantly surprised by the color, which is more of a toasty ocre, or dijon. And the black is actually more of a deep charcoal or graphite. The unit actually looks good -- well built and finished. I would actually feel bad using this in a workshop....and then I turned it on...Having planned to *add* it to the two Vornados, I temporarily unplugged one just to test the unit and see if it would work, and whether it was going to be too loud to tolerate. At first, I thought it wasn't working. There wasn't any sound. Then I moved my hand in front of the blower and found a very quiet, steady stream of cool air gently whooshing across the room in a very tightly focused column. I clicked the dial to turn it down -- but it wasn't on high, it had been on low. The column of air became stronger, the whooshing a bit louder... and there was yet another setting, higher still. The sound is about half as loud as a single Vornado and the volume of air on Medium is at least as generous as my Vornado on high.Aiming the blower is a simple, one handed operation of gentle but secure clicks, taking it from a horizontal to nearly vertical position. I put it in the near vertical position, clicked it up on high and was amazed at the movement of air around the apartment. It is bringing the AC into the hottest parts of the unit and cooling them down beautifully. Both Vornados are unplugged now.I couldn't be happier. In fairness, it's only a few hours old. If I experience any problems or reduction in performance, I'll return and update my review; otherwise, consider me a Lasko man from this day forth. Excellent value, styling and function. If you need me, I'll be practicing parasailing in the safety and comfort of my own home.
This is an amazing fan! It's honestly worth every penny if you place it next to a cold air conditioner vent it will act as an additional air conditioning unit and can cool down a 20x30 room in about 10 minutes!!! It's extremely durable and it's fantastic for drying floors I use it at work to keep me cool I work in a extremely hot kitchen the average temperature ranges from 94 to 102°. I stand between a 600 degree pizza oven and a 450° convection oven so you know it's very hot standing between those two this fan keeps me cool throughout my 12-hour shifts it enables me to do my job without pouring and sweat six hours in the shift and the cooler I stay the more stamina and longevity I have throughout the shift as I'm on my feet the entire time and moving... What I like most about this fan is that it moves Air at a high velocity and keeps me cool and it has additional plugs if you have a radio or need to charge your cell phone so it doesn't occupy your plug if you just have the one extension cord on site which is extremely convenient,, I can stand behind my review of this fan in addition to the sellers shipping it out to me 3 days early ,, I've purchased three of these fans from the manufacturer Lasko in the past 20yrs can honestly tell you there's no other fan on the market that can perform and cool like this one ,,Great job 👍
The media could not be loaded. I recently acquired this after my old box fan finally gave out. This has some obvious advantages over a box fan, particularly in that it offers the ability to have a far more focused and localized air stream. I like to have air on my feet while sleeping (weird, I know), but not my face, as the latter makes me sick. Box fans have traditionally been rather unreliable in that regard. This blower allows me to really get the air specifically where I want it, however, without the broader generalized draftiness that box fans typically produce when trying to accomplish the same objective. As the included video shows, this thing moves air pretty well. The workout mat depicted being lifted off the ground is just shy of NINE feet away from the blower on its high setting. It's not as powerful as the Lasko U15701 Max Performance model but it's comparable for only half the price. The Max costs twice as much but does not blow twice as hard. I placed the two side by side. I'd say the Max is about 20-30% stronger at best, which at double the price, isn't worth the cost in my opinion for general purpose use. This is more than adequate for single room usage. If placed in front of an AC or heater I imagine it would allow for some significant redirection of airflow. On its highest setting it can still be felt all the way across my bedroom (over 20 feet away). I've not had any reason to use it beyond that distance and haven't measured beyond such.I also like fans for the white noise they provide. This is a rather different sound than that of a box fan, but suffices in that regard also quite nicely. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the cylinder inside mine has a noticeable wobble, it arrived with the package opened, and both of those things concern me a little. So far it's been been great though, and I've mentioned it to a couple of friends.
Have older models and they have lasted for years ( still going). Needed another for a room so stuck with this brand. These last and really move the air. Being in a HOT climate I use these along with the AC to help keep the house cool.
I had read the reviews and thought that this would solve my problems of having a room that was way too hot. The traditional standing fan was not helping at all, if anything it was making the room much hotter and the air circulation was terrible. So I came online to search for something that was high powered. Someone I knew long ago had one of these things, but I had not given it much thought after seeing it at their place. When I found it online, it all came back to me. The high powered wind blowing, the quietness of the motor, and how it actually blows cool air.I read the reviews, and was amazed at how many people thought this product was so great. So I went ahead and ordered. I have Amazon Prime, so I received the item within 2 days, which was great!! The hot summer days here in the south are ridiculous and unbearable. I opened it, plugged it in, and it was nearly whisper quiet. I would not say this item is loud at all. Honestly, it is much QUIETER than a traditional box fan or a standing oscillating fan that just blows the air around. There was no rattling noise like some of the reviews stated, and nothing was loose. In addition to that, there is no vibrating that comes from the unit. The pivoting points are wonderful, and it does cool off the room very quickly. With or without the air conditioner on, this is a gem to have in the hell hot days of summer.I use it to quickly blow dry my hair without getting any heat damage, and who needs more heat blowing on them while drying their hair in the already too hot days of summer. I use it to dry off after the shower very quickly, and leave it on in my bedroom all day. Sleeping with it on is no problem either. There is no bright LED lights on it or even a power light, so there is no problem there. Plus it is quiet, no rattling sound or anything coming from it so sleeping with it on is no problem. The color of it is not a bright yellow like in the picture, but more of a dark mustard yellow, it goes well with light colored wood furniture. It is easy to pivot, pick up, carry, and set up (open box and plug in). These air blowers have to be the best fans or blowers on the market.5 stars all the way. Highly recommend.
Product was just as it was described and delivery was quick.
Great product built to las sort of. I run mine 24/7 365 last forever 5-6 years. My only issue is they made it to where you can't get into it to clean the fan squirrel cage you can blow it out with a leaf blower or high volume air compressor but you can not get to the squirrel cage to clean off the build up on the blades. When I called Lasko I was told they weren't made to clean??? and that you just have to let it were out and buy another one???
